Courses Offered

 All North Star Training Center instructors are DCJS certified. All course materials and equipment are provided by North Star Security Training Center; students will be provided with a take home resource packet for future reference. Each course follows a standard program outline that includes instructor lead discussion on pertinent areas of law, security implementation, job scenario-based application followed with an in-depth question and answer session. A certificate of completion will be awarded to those students who successfully meet all criteria of the course.  All classes will have closure activates and/or exams which demonstrate student proficiencies.

   Mandated New York State Training 

     8 Hour Pre-Assignment Course ($55.00)

This is a general introductory course. Upon successful completion of this course, the guard will be issued a NYS Security certificate. This certificate must accompany the security guard's registration application when submitted to the Department of State. Once submitted, the guard must complete the second training course within 90 days.

16 Hour OJT Course  ($110.00)

The On The Job Training (OJT) Class moves the security officer from theory to hands on training, concentrating on scenario-based training. This training program meets many needs relevant to the guard's duties and requirements of the work site of their employer. Schools may conduct this training in an approved classroom setting or work site that is conducive to learning.

8 & 16 Hour Combo Course ($155.00)

A $10.00 discount is offered to students who elect to take the 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Course & the 16 Hour OJT Course and who pay in advance. 

8 Hour Annual Refresher In Service Class($55.00)

New York State requires course completion each calendar year following the awarding of the 16 Hour OJT course. This program is designed to meet current training needs, refresh or update guards in changes in the security field. This course is a prerequisite for renewal of one’s guard registration.

47 Hour Fire Arms Training ($490.00)

This 47 Hour Firearms Training course is a prerequisite for all guards who carry firearms and must be completed before a guard can be licensed as an armed security guard. This course includes seven hours of classroom instruction in the Use of Force (NYS Penal Law Art. 35), followed by a written examination, and 40 hours on the firing range followed by weapons qualification. Upon successful completion of this course, the guard will be issued a training certificate. This certificate must accompany the security guard's registration application when submitted to the Department of State.

 Annual Firearms Renewal ($110.00)

This course meets the yearly requirement for armed guards.  This course includes three hours of classroom refresher on the Use of Force, followed by a written examination, and five hours of weapons qualification so a guard can complete a proficiency examination.

Bail Enforcement Agent Course - AKA "Bounty Hunter"

BEA Course ($400.00)

This three day course is designed for those interested in learning how to legally capture fugitives for a monetary reward (bounty). A Bail Enforcement Agent is a person who is offered or given compensation by a bail agent or surety in exchange for assisting the bail agent or surety in apprehending or surrendering any defendant, or keeping the defendant under necessary surveillance. The course will cover: History of Bail Enforcement; Bail Enforcement and the U.S. Constitution; Bail Enforcement and NY Law; Bail Enforcement Course Review & Test.  You must be 25 years of age to take this course and be eligible for a NYS Bail Enforcement License.

Advanced/Specialized Training 

Handcuff Training($55.00)

Specialized Training in Handcuffing and restraint tactics. This course is designed for security professionals who have already passed the 8 Hour Pre-assignment and 16 Hour OJT training courses. Topics include: overview of New York State Laws, Powers of Arrest, compliant and non-compliant handcuffing, handcuffing from the escort position and ground cuffing tactics. This course will provide tools for Security Officers to employ a reasonable, restrained, response.

Pepper Spray Training($55.00)     

Participants will learn the principle skills and techniques necessary for the proper use of pepper spray, NYS laws of arrest relating to use of force by security personnel, techniques to control violent aggressive behavior including the use of pepper spray. Participants will also learn multiple methods for the decontamination of pepper spray, whether direct or indirect, to reduce personal injuries to officers, subjects, and the general public.

Resistance Training ($55.00)

This course is designed for security professionals who may encounter a deadly instrument on the job site. The emphasis is on a reasonable, restrained response to such situations through applying situational awareness, calculating a “fight or flight” analysis and how to successfully employ restraining techniques.

Advanced Searches, Inspections & Scanning ($55.00)

Hands on training emphasizes reasonable force and the legality of searches, common and uncommon places of contraband. Participants will receive an in-depth presentation concerning proper searches and the different methods civilians and professionals use to circumvent  scanning systems.  This course is designed to give the security professional the tools necessary to maintain a contraband free environment.
